Carbon Monitoring System

Pilot Projects

Carbon Monitoring Pilot Initiative: Biomass and Carbon Storage
Carbon storage in vegetation represents an important reservoir within the global carbon cycle, and changes in carbon uptake by and storage within vegetation and their soils can have significant impact on the global carbon balance. (pdf)

NASA CMS 2010, Pilot Study: Surface Carbon Fluxes
There are no direct global‐scale observations of carbon fluxes between the land and
oceans and the overlying atmosphere. Understanding the carbon cycle requires estimates of these fluxes, which can be computed indirectly using models constrained with global space‐based observations that provide information about the physical and biological state of the land, atmosphere or ocean.
