The Ocean Productivity Website Project and Stewardship of NASA Standard Productivity Products

Project Funding: 2007 - 2010

Funded by NASA

Abstract:
Net primary production (NPP) is the only ocean biological process specifically called out as a remote sensing measurement goal in NASA’s Strategic Science Outcomes for Earth Science (Sub-goal 3A, Outcome #3). Accordingly, a significant share of research funding under the Ocean Biology and Biogeochemistry Program is regularly invested toward developing, applying, and testing advanced NPP algorithms. While important, these activities are generally not aimed at generating standard NPP products for the user community, which ranges from researchers to teachers, students, and resource managers. The project proposed here is a service oriented effort with the sole objective of providing standard global NPP products to this diverse user community and information on its underlying science and uncertainties. The central product of this effort is the Ocean Productivity Website, from which standard productivity products and alternative NPP estimates are made available. The website also provides information on model differences, estimates of uncertainties, merged land-ocean products, field data sets for model development and testing, background information on productivity modeling and algal photosynthesis, model code, summaries of basic findings, and educational material. This project is viewed as an on-going effort that provides continuity in NPP products across missions and involves an active participation by the ocean productivity modeling community.
