EXPORTS:
EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing

EXPORTS diagram

EXPORTS is a scoping study for a major NASA field campaign.

NASA Ocean Biology and Biogeochemistry Program advertised in the ROSES 2012 research announcement for scoping studies to identify the scientific questions and develop the initial study design and implementation concept for a new NASA Ocean Biology and Biogeochemistry field campaign or related team project (following ICESCAPE, SO GasEx, etc.). EXPORTS is one of three projects to write a Science Plan. After a public comment period, the EXPORTS Science Plan was submitted for peer review and after approval a Science Definition Team was formed to write an Implemention Plan. The draft Implementation Plan will be made available for public comment about July 2016.

Goal: Predict the export and fate of ocean Net Primary Production (NPP) from satellite and other observations.

Hypothesis: Carbon export from the euphotic zone and its fate within the twilight zone can be predicted knowing characteristics of the surface ocean ecosystem.
