Future field campaigns?
Chair: Fred Huemmrich
Discussion Questions:
  • Should the Terrestrial Ecology program continue to conduct major, focused field campaigns like BOREAS and LBA?
  • If so, what research issues and/opportunities should be considered for the next Terrestrial Ecology field campaign? Do you have something specific to propose and how should it be further explored/planned? Are we missing an opportunity in NACP?
  • If not, are there other large-scale, coordinated research activities that would be more important to consider? And what are they?
Comments:
--- Please forward any additional comments to the relevant Program Manager at NASA Headquarters. ---
One area where organized field campaigns could be very useful is in the development of algorithms that merge multiple data types, such as vegetation structure from lidar and vegetation function from hyperspectral. Well before satellites fly with these types of sensors, a series of aircraft missions in different ecosystems along with an intensive set of ground measurements would advance our ability to use these data effectively together.
