LBA progress and plans

Discussion Questions:
  • What, if any, type of research should follow the completion of NASA's phase 3 of LBA? What are the most compelling questions that remain or that have arisen through LBA results?
  • How are the synthesis teams progressing? Are we lacking any data or type of analysis needed to complete a synthesis study? How could that need be filled?
  • What should we do to "get the word out" to decision-makers and the public concerning our new knowledge and other accomplishments in LBA?

In the discussion regarding fire or burned-area detection, I suggested that we look into future-sensor possibilities with multi-observational InSAR. But I forgot to mention that polarimetric L-band SAR with PALSAR (ALOS) may also provide info on areas that have burned. This is because, while SAR alone—that is, straight non-interferometric SAR—cannot really uniquely estimate structure (without serious constraints from models or other data), it is definitely sensitive to structure. For example, if the ground surface has dried because of fire (does this happen?), the ground bounce at L-band may be suppressed relative to neighboring areas where the ground may be wet. Wet surfaces under canopies, I believe, can produce a more distinct polarimetric signature, though I base this on fundamental observations about scattering from surfaces and do not have a reference to support this claim. Dryer canopies with more burned vegetation will produce weaker SAR signals, suggesting another way L-band polarimetric SAR might help. These mechanisms and the efficacy of L-band for burned-area detection could be tested with PALSAR in Amazônia. I am leaning on SAR, rather than InSAR for PALSAR because I am worried about the 45-day repeat and the ensuing temporal decorrelation. But L-band InSAR with PALSAR could/should also be explored, despite my bias agianst it, which could be wrong.
