Modeling goals & objectives/future directions

Discussion Questions:
  • What are the most important modeling needs and challenges for NASA to address in the next few years?
  • How could the current program "portfolio" be improved?
  • What should the role of Terrestrial Ecology and related programs be in the advancement toward integrated Earth system models?
  • What results from this area feed into NASA's Ecological Forecasting program? How can this transition be improved/strengthened? How do we know/decide when a modeling capability has matured to the stage it can be used in decision support?

Perhaps you folks have some thoughts on this….

….some very preliminary thoughts on a “modeling web,” a long-term (5-10 yrs or more), vision-level concept. Since other organizations/projects/people (ESMF, OGC…) must be discussing this, please let me know if you know who they are.

Modeling web:
* Distributed network of interoperating models (and datasets)
* Model scope could include all physical and biological processes
* Output could feed ecological forecasting and other disciplines
* Web grows organically within a framework of data exchange standards and broad goals
* Each model or dataset maintained, operated, and served independently
* Best models used more and move forward (natural selection)
* Fits with GEOSS
* Global, interagency, international
* US contributors could include NASA (various programs), NOAA, USGS, NSF (NEON…)…

Purpose: to facilitate the coupling of models in different disciplines, and their use by other models or data users. Ecological forecasting would tend to be on the downstream side, fairly close to end-users such as conservation managers.

Other comments:

* There would be no central organization except probably to set standards for data exchange, and some broad goals.
* Participation in the web would be voluntary and up to the individual modeling groups and their sponsors.
* Such a model web would become, in effect, a single large model, analogous to a web computer.

Our (NASA GSFC) "ACCESS" effort to improve NACP modelers' access to MODIS data has indicated that NASA data providers could do a better job providing modelers with the data they need. Our admittedly limited interaction (with ~6 NACP modelers) in the first 1/2 year of our project has indicated unanimous need for smoothed time series data that does not have gaps throughout the landscape. MODIS does produce Climate Modeling Grid (CMG) data, but these are at a coarse resolution. Similar “modeling grids”, which are smoothed and gap-filled, at the highest possible resolution would likely be very valuable to the modeling community.
