NASA Terrestrial Ecology Data Products and Data Access Working Group

Introduction

The research goals of the NASA Terrestrial Ecology Program require data sets that span multiple disciplines, and which are derived from a variety of sources (including data from satellite remote sensing, aircraft, in situ networks, and field campaigns). In addition, new remote sensing data products and tools are being created though PI-led research activities, and through formal solicitations (e.g. MEASURES, ACCESS).

The Data Products and Data Access Working Group address priorities for new data products, and how to improve access to and usability of existing data sets.

Members will be expected to bring their own perspectives, but also represent broader research constituencies.

Specific issues to be addressed include:

  • What additional long-term data records need to be created or better supported to advance TE research goals?
  • What are the priorities for maintaining/enhancing existing data products, including standard EOS data sets as well as those derived from PI-led efforts?
  • How could the TE program invest resources to make data sets easier to access, manipulate, and combine with other sources of information and/or models? This may involve issues associated with data semantics (variable definitions, enforcing consistency), metadata provision, physical formatting, and "high grading" (e.g. improving quality via filtering, gap-filling, etc), as well as the availability of software tools and services.
  • What are the priorities for improving access to key "external" (non-NASA) data sources, including international inventory and remote sensing data?
  • What are the priorities for new mission and cross-mission data products emerging from the Decadal Survey era?

We anticipate that the Data Working Group will have connections with other TE Working Groups, including those for Modeling, Field Campaigns, and Airborne Observations.

Provided an issue is relevant to TE field campaigns and of importance to the TE community (e.g. identified at a recent TE workshop, see Data Needs, Products, Distribution, and Stewardship), the WG will have the ability identify a new issue for its consideration and develop the agenda to address it.

Details regarding the operations of the WG will be determined by the WG in consultation with the CC&E Office and the TE Program Manger. Recommendations from the working group will be conveyed to the CC&E Office and the TE Program Manager for their consideration and potential implementation. Recommendations will be shared with the broad TE community through the TE Web site and other appropriate means.
