Abstract:
The focus of NASA's New Investigator Program is in encouraging the integration of Earth system research and education for scientists early in their careers. To this end this project has specific science and educational objectives. The main scientific objective of this three-year proposal is to integrate a NASA sponsored advanced satellite-based bioinformatic water mass and biome classification algorithm with high resolution subsurface glider AUV and ARGO data to produce 3-D visualizations of water masses and biomes for global biome characterization and regional water mass characterization. Furthermore these data sets will be related with advanced neural networks that will allow the subsurface structure NASA derived biomes and water masses to be used as predictors of subsurface water column stratification that is integral in understanding natural and anthropogenic change in the ocean. The main educational objective is to build on NASA's GLOBE project by creating an ocean biogeography module for 12th grade through partnerships with the Delaware Department of Education and the Centers for Ocean Science Education Excellence that emphasizes the distribution and seasonal fluctuations in ocean biomes and water masses. This plan uses space based remote sensing as the primary teaching and data analysis platform for learning about he biogeography of the ocean. In addition, data fusion of space-based remote sensing and in-situ data prepare students to work with, detect and visualize the biome structure of the world ocean.
