Vulnerability and Resiliency of Arctic and Sub-Arctic Landscapes (VuRSAL) - A NASA Sponsored Scoping Study on Feedbacks in High Latitude Systems

NASA is presently sponsoring two studies to identify the scientific questions and develop the initial study design and implementation concept for a new NASA Terrestrial Ecology field campaign or related team project. One of these scoping studies is examining the role of interactions between climate, permafrost, hydrology, and disturbance in driving ecosystem processes in high-northern latitude regions. Based upon the recommendations from a workshop held in August 2009, we are developing a draft concise experiment plan for the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE). ABoVE will address knowledge gaps in six science themes: Disturbance, Permafrost, Land Surface Hydrology, Ecosystems Dynamics, Soil Carbon, and Land-Atmosphere Feedbacks Disturbance, Permafrost, Land Surface Hydrology, Ecosystems Dynamics, Soil Carbon, and Land-Atmosphere Feedbacks. In this poster paper, we will present an overview of ABoVE.
