NRC Study to Assess Requirements for Sustained Ocean Color Research and Operations.

Claudia Mengelt, Ocean Studies Board, NAS, cmengelt@nas.edu

NASA, NOAA, NSF and ONR sponsored a study by the Ocean Studies Board of The National Academies to assess requirements for sustained ocean color research and operations. The report was issued in August, 2011, and made recommendations and conclusions in 3 thematic areas: (1) take steps to ensure science-quality (climate-quality) ocean color data from VIIRS on NPP and on future VIIRS instruments, (2) ensure access of U.S. investigators to data products produced from future ESA, JAXA and other satellite ocean color sensors, and (3) advance satellite ocean color capabilities for the future including NASA Decadal Survey missions: ACE, GEO-CAPE and HyspIRI. The report also recommended that U.S. agencies (NOAA, NASA) move away from a mission-centric approach to a data-centric approach, such as currently used for processing satellite SST (from microwave radiometers) and SSH (from altimeters) data.
