NASA's Global Change Master Directory (GCMD)(http://gcmd.nasa.gov/) enables the scientific community to discover and access over 25,000 Earth science data sets and services available for diverse scientific research. GCMD users can access descriptions of data sets, data-related services, instruments, projects and platforms on Biosphere-related topics such as: biogeochemical cycles, fire ecology, land management, vegetation cover, biomass dynamics, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and more. GCMD’s online metadata authoring tool, docBUILDER, provides a tool for users to create and maintain consistent descriptions of data sets, services, instruments and platforms. Controlled science keyword vocabularies, offered within the directory, permit authors to choose appropriate keywords from a normalized list when describing data sets and services. Users have the option of selecting from the keyword vocabularies or conducting a free-text search to find available data sets and services. The GCMD staff also collaborates with partner organizations, such as the USGS' Biological Resources Division (BRD). Through these partnerships, the GCMD is able to provide metadata creation assistance to other agencies and institutions as well as support the ongoing development of biological and ecological data set descriptions.
