NPP VIIRS Land Product Evaluation and Algorithm Test Element

The Land PEATE (Product Evaluation and Algorithm Test Element) supports VIIRS (Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) Science Team members in their evaluation of the quality and accuracy of Land products produced by the Interface and Data Processing Subsystem (IDPS) at NESDIS and the suitability of these products for studying long-term trends in climate or ecosystems. The PEATE also provides an environment for developing and testing improvements to algorithms and production software used by the IDPS to produce the suite of land products.



The Land PEATE data system is built upon a foundation of MODAPS (MODIS Adaptive Processing System) for processing and LAADS (Land and Atmosphere Archive and Distribution System) for archive and distribution. It shares a common network infrastructure with MODIS processing systems and resources can be shared between MODIS and VIIRS as the need arises in the VIIRS post-launch timeframe. As in the case of MODIS products distributed through LAADS, the VIIRS Land products under evaluation will be available through an ftp site accessible from the Internet for evaluation by the VIIRS Science Team and the broader land science community. To facilitate comparison between VIIRS land products and those of MODIS, the VIIRS products will be produced in HDF-EOS as 5-minutes granules with MODIS-like metadata .



Product evaluation will be conducted by the Science Team and by members of Land Operational Product Evaluation (LDOPE). Know issues with products will be posted at the VIIRS quality assessment web site http://landweb.nascom.nasa.gov/NPP.
