Soil contamination of the canopy reflectance over low vegetation areas such as over grasslands is a major problem in vegetation moisture retrievals. Improved methods are explored for minimizing soil effects in vegetation moisture retrievals. An origin shifted transformation of the Normalized Difference Infrared Index is investigated for soil adjusted retrievals of vegetation moisture. Further we explore the use of prior information in radiative transfer inversion based retrievals of vegetation moisture and investigate the extent to which such retrievals can be improved by the use of prior information on soil moisture and LAI.
