As the lead technology office within the NASA Earth Science Division, the Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) funds the development and demonstration of technologies that can be reliably and confidently applied to a broad range of Earth science measurements. ESTO currently holds a portfolio of well over 500 past and active investments – from next generation sensors and instruments to communication systems and sensor web technologies - at over 70 institutions nationwide.
By design, many of these technologies are applicable, directly and indirectly, to carbon cycle, biosphere and ecosystem science measurement goals. ESTO is fundamentally science-driven and strives to find solutions for the future challenges and requirements specific to the varied Earth science communities. This science focus, coupled with flexible investment strategies and a competitive peer-review selection process, has resulted in a very high rate of infusion success; ESTO-funded technologies have supported numerous Earth and space science missions as well as spin-off applications that benefit society at large.
