NASA's Global Change Master Directory: Discover and Access Earth Science Data Sets and Services

Alicia M. Aleman, NASA's Global Change Master Directory, alicia.m.aleman@nasa.gov (Presenting)

NASA's Global Change Master Directory (GCMD, http://gcmd.nasa.gov/) enables the scientific community to discover and access Earth science data sets and services relevant to global change research. The directory currently holds over 21,000 descriptions covering all Earth science disciplines. GCMD users can access over 10,000 unique data sets, tools, instruments, projects and platforms on Biosphere related topics such as: biogeochemical cycles, population dynamics, fire ecology, indigenous/native species, land management, vegetation cover, biomass dynamics, ocean color, forest management and more.

GCMD offers an online metadata authoring tool, docBUILDER, that allows users to create and maintain data set and service records through the website. Controlled science keywords make authoring efficient and also provide for a normalized search.

GCMD collaborates with partner organizations to provide customized views of the directory through portals. Portals help provide science, or application-specific focus for other agencies, science focus, consortia, etc.
