High-Resolution Coastal Ocean and Atmosphere PCO2 Time-Series Measurements

Abstract:
The continental margins play an important role in the global carbon cycle because they provide a unique intersection between the three reservoirs (terrestrial biosphere, atmosphere and ocean)that can naturally exchange carbon on time scales relevant to human activity. The continental margins are characterized by large spatial and temporal variability. In 2006, four Moored Autonomous pCO2 (MAPCO2) systems were built at PMEL and deployed on surface moorings in coastal waters representing four very different biogeochemical provinces of the North American coast: Kaneohe Bay Hawaii, near Aberdeen Washington, near Savannah Georgia and near Portsmouth New Hampshire. These moorings are being used to examine the similarities and differences in surface water CO2 and evaluate the role of high frequency CO2 variability in determining net fluxes in coastal waters. These data demonstrate the need for an array of coastal CO2 moorings to quantify the role of the continental margins in the continental and global scale carbon cycle.
