An extensive set of field measurements have been collected throughout the continental margin of the northeastern U.S. from 2004 to 2013 to develop and validate ocean color satellite algorithms for the retrieval of carbon and optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM). We measured lignin phenol composition, DOC and chromophoric DOM (CDOM) absorption within the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay mouths, plumes and adjacent coastal ocean waters to derive empirical relationships between CDOM and biogeochemical measurements for satellite remote sensing application. The various products that we can retrieve from MODIS and SeaWiFS include the absorption coefficient of CDOM (aCDOM), CDOM spectral slopes for the 275:295 nm and 300:600 nm spectral range (S275:295 and S300:600) and products derived from CDOM including DOC and lignin. Lignin ranged from 0.03 to 6.6 ug/L between estuarine and outer shelf waters. As a biomarker of terrestrial plants, satellite-derived dissolved lignin can be applied to track terrestrial contributions into estuarine and coastal ocean waters. Our results demonstrate that satellite-derived CDOM is useful as a tracer of terrigenous DOM in the coastal ocean.
