Abstract:
At the time, sampling was imperative because processing the whole US Landsat archive was cost prohibitive. However, given that Landsat data are now freely available, and that we can now accurately process large numbers of LTSS for disturbance characterization, we have the opportunity to extend NAFD results and more fully meet the information needs of the NACP in two critical ways. First, we can completely eliminate sampling error from our initial estimates of national disturbance rates by processing all Landsat scenes in annual time steps for the conterminous US. Second, we can provide a high-quality wall-to-wall disturbance map at Landsat spatial resolution needed for comprehensive carbon flux modeling nationwide. at NASA Ames Research Center to process the entire archive of Landsat observations acquired for the US from 1982 to present.
