Abstract:
Our project is designed to quantify the climate impacts of a changing boreal fire regime by focusing on the use of satellite remote sensing, integrated with ecosystem models and field measurements, to: (i) quantify how tradeoffs associated with carbon and radiation fluxes vary with time since fire in boreal forest ecosystems (ii) capture synoptic scale vegetation responses to past disturbance between differing northern high latitude forests, (iii) address uncertainties in carbon and energy exchange and how these feedback to the climate system. We will make use of field measurements in interior Alaska and the Russian Far East (Chirskii region), augmented with additional observations, building upon our past work at these sites. We will also make use of a wide range of NASA satellite data products, augmented with additional observations and derived products as needed.
