Abstract:
Our proposal seeks to provide the calibrations, atmospheric correction algorithms, and software to retrieve water-leaving radiances from MODIS Aqua and Terra of the highest quality possible, and to assess the quality of those radiances and derived geophysical products through validation against field measurements, global and regional time-series analyses, and comparison with other ocean color mission time-series such as SeaWiFS and MERIS. We further propose to continue our past work in maintaining and advancing the geophysical retrieval algorithms for standard MODIS ocean color products, including the historical chlorophyll and diffuse attenuation, and to facilitate the integration and global evaluation of new algorithms and derived products proposed by the Science Team or research community. Following on the success of our first international workshop on Inherent Optical Property (IOP) algorithms, we further propose to lead a second international IOP workshop with the goal of refining the model to be employed in operational production of MODIS IOP products and IOP-derived products such as euphotic depth. We will also leverage our co-location with the Ocean Data Processing System to provide cost-effective support to the MODIS sea surface temperature lead, providing daily satellite to buoy match-up products for algorithm refinement and validation.
