Abstract:
We propose to maintain the MODIS Collection 6 Active Fire (MOD14) product, which will commence production in January 2011. As part of this effort, we will continue our on-going Quality Assessment of the fire products. Given the maturity of the Terra and Aqua satellites, we will devote particular attention to the status of the ageing Terra and Aqua MODIS sensors, and perform algorithm and/or software adjustments as needed to maintain a consistent long term MODIS data record. We will perform a Stage 3 Validation of the Collection 6 product using an automated system assembled by our team members with an existing database of 2,500 ASTER scenes, plus additional Landsat scenes, which provide a comprehensive sample of daytime and nighttime fire activity worldwide. Particular attention will be given to product accuracy and uncertainty. We will maintain the production, quality assessment, and distribution of the MODIS Climate Modeling Grid (CMG) fire products produced at the MODIS Fire Team Science Computing Facility. The Team will update the User Guide as needed. This will be a modest cost proposal. This proposal is responsive to Section 2.4 (Algorithms - existing product refinement) of the ROSES Terra/Aqua call.
